Hvitserkur
Hvitserkur
The Hvitserkur is a famous rock formation located on the north coast of Iceland, near the Vatnsnes Peninsula. It is a basalt sea stack that rises about 15 meters (49 feet) out of the sea and has been sculpted by the forces of erosion over thousands of years. The shape of the Hvitserkur is often compared to an animal, with many people seeing a dragon, a dinosaur or even an elephant in its form. Its name, which means "white shirt" in Icelandic, comes from the white colour of the bird droppings that cover the top of the rock. Legend has it that the Hvitserkur is a troll that was caught by the rising sun and turned into stone. Another tale tells of a group of trolls who attempted to drag a ship to shore, but were turned into stone by the first rays of sunlight. These legends add to the allure of this unique natural wonder in Iceland.
