Great Southern Land
Wergaia or Werrigia is an indigenous Australian language group in the Wimmera region of north-Western Victoria. Twenty clans made up the Wergaia people. The Wergaia language was apparently a dialect of the Wemba Wemba language. The people were known as the Maligundidj, which means the people belonging to the mali (mallee) eucalypt bushland which covers much of their territory. Lake Tyrrell is part of the land of the Boorong clan of the Wergaia Language Group. The Boorong were famous astronomers, with their dreaming stories told in the skies reflected on Lake Tyrrell. I spent 3 days exploring this area and was so fascinated by the landscape I found myself walking for hours upon hours. Having stumbled upon these mud cracks in the middle of the day with the scorching sun beating down upon me, I realised a story was was about to unfold. The scorched ground and cracks in the mud with the classic Australian outback colours were right at my feet, this was a perfect scene and a perfect photo in outback Victoria, Great Southern Land.
